WEDNESDAY KIRWAN
at RITUAL
A solo show of original works by Wednesday Kirwan.
Wednesday Kirwan's paintings draw inspiration from a mishmash of sources including pin-up art, mid-century animation, the symbolist painters, greek mythology, and California's coastline. Kirwan's subjects are often sweet-faced women with pudgy, childlike proportions and the lower extremities of classic mythological creatures. They lounge or swim amidst a background of seductively vibrant color and patterns. Behind the cherubian-faces, however, is the suggestion of menace. Like the symbolist painters, Kirwan presents the viewers with she-monsters who are sexy, independent, and capable of a barely checked feminine ferocity. Kirwan paints in a number of styles, but is always interested in the contrast set up by creating an appealing image of dark or slightly disturbing subject matter. To see more of Wednesday's work, visit www.wednesdaykirwan.com. Wednesday's first children's book, "Nobody Notices Minerva" is available on bookshelves now.
