PIRATE versus NINJA
The age old question - that deep and dark mystery that we know as Pirates Versus Ninja. We all know who would win - the pirates of course!
Just kidding, ninja-lovers. Ninjas would of course win. Or at the very least the British Royal Navy and their (no, no, we're not really pirates because we're being paid) Privateers. But who would have more fun? That's the real question, and I think we all know the answer to that one.
A good read on the subject of pirates, by the way, is "the Republic of Pirates" by Colin Woodard: the trials and tribulations of Caribbean pirates in the not particularly long-lived Golden Age of Pirates.
I have no books to recommend for ninjas, but they're cool cats no doubt. Out of the box thinkers and all that. For some interesting applications of their techniques, check out "the Center for Tactical Magic":http://www.tacticalmagic.org/

a few years back I was in aardvark books and found a great out of print book for ninjas called "How To Be Invisible," but the closest thing to a ninja manifesto...no wait - its samurais, but can I borrow from the sams in this case? if I could I would say the book is Hagkure http://www.amazon.com/Hagakure-Book-Samauri-Yamamoto-Tsunetomo/dp/4770029160/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1197522803&sr=8-1 but even better is the film "Ghost Dog" with Forest Whitaker (what is more brilliant than his French ice cream selling friend - pure fantasticality) http://imdb.com/title/tt0165798/ but now I am way off in left field with the samurai, sorry about that - I guess I don't know of any in print books about ninjas...but hey I like Samurais and pirates better - so there!
