25th Anniversary of the Smiley
Tell us how you'll celebrate
From http://www.cs.cmu.edu/smiley.
"A lot of people have asked me about this, so I thought I’d put the information here, linked under my home page: Yes, I am the inventor of the sideways “smiley face” (sometimes called an “emoticon”) that is commonly used in E-mail, chat, and newsgroup posts. Or at least I’m one of the inventors."
SHORT FORM: What you don't like smileys? ;-) At least they help keep the carpal tunnel in check :-| True, they can be lame though ** %-) 3 ** :-P

LONG FORM: Wow I can't believe you don't like the smiley (he says with a tinge of sarcasm). It's really pretty useful shorthand in my opinion (he says grimacing from the pain his carpal tunnel is giving him as he types this). But you know I can see how you've come to hate them what with their being pretty similar to decorating letters with hearts and flowers (he says remembering with a grunt all those dorky high school girlfriend letters)

I vote for cop rock. Busy guys in uniform showing emotion--you gotta be careful with that.

Really, you don't feel like smacking that person who drops in the emoticon instead of actually using their words to get the point across? Especially the winking one. That one makes me want to join the NRA. Cop Rock just makes one want to reach for the liquor cabinet.

wow .. not to diss cop rock or anything, but I must say the smily is a much much much much much much better contribution to society .. watching that video requires use of that popular phrase "I feel dumber after watching that".

Thanks to Naomi this page now features a Cop Rock video clip. Thanks for the tip Naomi!

What! A naysayer! A smiley negater! Damn, don't know how to do "The Scream" in ascii... :-| What's Cop Rock? Sounds neat.

Why the hell would any one want to take credit for creating the emoticon? Emoticons are right up there with Cop Rock as one of the worst creations ever.l

since the tone in email is misunderstood 50% of the time, it behooves us all to use the mighty smiley... even if it seems dorky. i also enjoy throwing my hands in the air. \[-_-]\/[-_-/ long live ascii!
