CAFFIENDS

CAFFIENDS
During the Rorschach test, a subject is shown mirrored inkblots and asked to describe what they “see”. Some psychologists believe that insightful observations about the subject’s psyche can be made through the results of this test. The patented inkblots are closely guarded and administered exclusively unto those whom the test is prescribed (although similar versions are available to the general public).
The mechanics of the Rorschach test drive this ongoing series entitled “Caffiends”. Pieces within the series are born from the random shapes created by spilling (sometimes spitting) coffee onto paper. Once this stain dries, I begin looking into the impressionable shape for visions and (un)familiar imagery. Using mostly graphite to excavate anthropomorphic characters and imaginary environs, each finished piece is as much about discovery as it is meditation.
Growing up, I was that kid gazing into a sea of clouds to discover the face, rabbit, or lamb skeleton as it shape-shifted above. Today, as an artist, I find myself still looking into surfaces for answers to a visual question. It is assured that the result of what I “see” will be a unique vision based simply on my own inherent and inescapable individuality. I enjoy this moment where chance and freedom are bound by physical dexterity and the tendencies of the subconscious, yet calculative mind.
“Caffeinds” are indirect portraits of myself. Each, a self-administered psychoanalysis, with a wink and a nod to the playful child, still very much alive within me. This work, like the Rorschach test, is neither passed nor failed, but rather taken; the results studied and the subject of its issuance distinguished.
