Artist's Statement
So this all started off with an interest in things in the world that have a certain ‘wrongness,’ specifically the clash that sometimes occurs between natural and artificial elements. Intersections that create a strange combination of beauty and ugliness and usually leave me with the strong desire to run away to the middle of nowhere.
In my paintings I began to bring together things like TV and the forest, butterflies and chain link fences, graphic elements and looser more expressive marks. I thought a lot. Mostly I thought about three things: painting electric light versus atmospheric light, the philosophical concept of the ‘golden mean,’ or the desirable middle between two extremes, and thirdly, the bigness of space and the smallness of me.
Admittedly, and perhaps to you obviously, I got a little lost in all the thoughts— but in that, painted my way from the earthly, electrical clash of the world outside of me and began exploration of the spiritual landscape inside.
